Somatic Therapy: A body Based Therapy

Somatic therapy is a body based practice that works in a gentle yet deep way. It’s intention is to help guide our awareness back to the wisdom of our own body, whilst still working with the mind. Body time is often much slower than mental time, so when working in a somatic way, we often slow things down to really let the body speak. The body can often speak in sensations, images, feelings, emotions, impulses, movements, behaviours, holding patterns, and energy. By allowing space for the body to really speak we are able to tap into a deep innate wisdom we all have within us. Sometimes feeling into the body can feel overwhelming, scary or hard. This is why it is important to work in a slow, deliberate, and gentle way to really let the body feel like it has space to speak. In terms of it’s origins, Wilheim Reich was a deep pioneer in this style of therapy, as well as Peter Levine. Currently there are many practitioners working across the globe with this style of therapy, as well as many programs.

How I like to work as a somatic therapist is in a holistic and integrative way. I love to incorporate all my trainings that I have received, and then weave in somatic therapy techniques. I really love working with somatic therapy techniques as a bridge to really build towards doing a breathwork session with a client. I have great reverence, love & respect for somatic therapy and it has been profoundly healing for me in my wellness journey. Witnessing clients connect to their body wisdom is one of my favorite parts of being a therapist.
